London Re-use Network featured in Around Ealing

Ealing residents are being encouraged to donate their unwanted household items for re-use via The re-use hotline collection service, which has been running in the borough since September.

Speaking to Around Ealing, the council’s own magazine which is distributed to every household in the borough, Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, the council’s cabinet member for transport and environment, explained why there are so many benefits of re-use:

“By taking advantage of this service and letting us do the heavy lifting, there are so many benefits for our community. It is extraordinary.
“Apart from removing hassle and effort for you, the service helps the environment through reduced carbon emissions. It helps us all by resulting in lower waste disposal costs and less money wasted on landfill charges. It adds to our country’s target for us all to recycle or re-use 50% of waste by 2020. And, just as importantly, it helps the welfare of local people in need, as well as charities and community groups, by providing furniture and domestic appliances they would otherwise not be able to afford. “An added bonus is that this new partnership with Furnish and LRL will provide training, volunteering and job placement opportunities for our residents.”

The council have also sent out leaflets, part funded by WRAP, which provide details of the benefits re-use will bring to the community and how local people can donate unwanted bulky items.

All items are collected from inside resident’s property, meaning they remain in good condition, and that London Re-use Network takes responsibility for the heavy lifting.

Ealing residents can book a collection online at www.londonreuse.com, or by calling

The scheme is also open to people living in the City of London, Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington & Chelsea, Lambeth, Wandsworth and Waltham Forest.
